Chapter 25

Jennifer Costilla was all smiles.

She and Miguel had managed to escape Mercedes Costilla’s neighborhood by blending into the throngs of frightened local residents as they fled the carnage in the middle of their block. She had scampered past dead and critically wounded FBI agents and Chicago police officers, struggling to hold back the nefarious smile that now shown on her surgically reconstructed face.

“This has been one of the greatest days of my life,” she said as she sat next to Miguel in the passenger’s seat of the red Chevy Malibu. She was watching the Miami Beach shootout on her computer tablet and thanking God for her Mexican Mafia connections.

Miguel had just parked the car about twenty yards up the road from the Highland Park mansion they were there to visit.

“It has been a great one,” he said with a chuckle.

“Yes. Most certainly.”

“What if they kill her?”

“They won’t.”

“But you told them to kill her.”

“They’ll never make it past Enrique, and he’s going to protect Alexus until his last breath.”

“Then what was the point in sending them in the first place?”

“To instill fear, Miguel. To frighten the living daylights out of Alexus, you see? Frighten her away from the cartel. That way, my dear brother Flako can take over and bring the cartel back to its roots. Alexus is my niece, and I love her dearly, but she is an American. No American deserves the right to lead a Mexican drug cartel. My mother left the cartel to Alexus because she said her granddaughter was the only Costilla smart enough to inherit the family business and keep it thriving. It should have been left to me.”

“Vida Costilla was pretty old, wasn’t she?”

“Yes. My mother was seventy-three. She didn’t know what she was doing.”

“She couldn’t have. Nobody can think clearly at that age.”

“She was taken advantage of,” Jenny said.

“Alexus should be ashamed of herself.”

“She really should. But it’s okay. She’ll pay dearly. I’m far from done with her. When it’s all said and done, she’ll curse the day she became boss of the Costilla Cartel.”

“I think she’s already cursing that day.”

“I think you’re right,” Jenny said, and her villainous smile returned.
